Attachment Filter

The Attachment Filter is used to reject mail that has an attachment that you specify (either by extension, or by name). The attachment filter references a text file for the prohibited attachments. When an email with one of the prohibited attachments reaches the server, the message is rejected.

If the message is rejected SLmail sends a fatal error message back to the originating server. The email is not returned to the sender, however, they may (depends on client) receive a message that states that the message was rejected due to a prohibited attachment.

The SLmail administrator can also specify an email address on the server where the rejected messages can be forwarded. The redirected message is appended with header information for all original (intended) recipients of the message.

The redirect address is specified in the General Filter Settings section of the Filter Manager. See the General Filter Settings section for more information.

Note: By default the Attachment Filter blocks all emails with .vbs and .shs file attachments.

The Filter Information dialog box gives a description of the filter. You can disable the attachment filter by unchecking the Filter Enabled check box.

Note: You will be prompted to restart your computer for this change to take effect.

Attachment Filter sample text file

The text file that is listed in the text box on the Attachment Filter dialog box will open in your default text file editor. You may add as many entries to the text file that you wish. You can block all attachments with a certain file extension (by using wildcards as in the default), by partial names such as " *text*.gif ", or you may block attachments by name such as " happy99.exe ." Each entry in the list must be separated with a carriage return.

Note: You can block all attachments by entering "*.*".

Save the text file and then return to the Attachment Filter dialog box. Click Next to continue and then confirm the changes by clicking Apply in the next dialog box.

Note: A server restart is not necessary to update or append the Attachment Filter text file. When the file is saved the changes are effective immediately.
